Testimonials are an important part of your marketing. Because with testimonials, your prospects can hear from other people, how they have liked your product or service.
Well I wanted to share an “off the cuff” testimonial I got from one of my students who took my Website Creation Workshop last spring. The course where I teach people how to get their websites setup with WordPress.Â
We were speaking in a conversation after the preview call, and I had the recording equipment still on. He told me this story I didn’t know while he was in my class.
[audio:http://shoppingcartqueen.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/dovelstory-clip.mp3]His name is Dovell Bonnett, and his website is http://www.idprotectionexpert.com/blog/Â (he built this website during our Spring 2008 Workshop)Â Â told me how webmasters had ripped him off of lots and lots of money over the years, and how now, with my training, he has taken back control of his website:
Dovell: “The one thing that happened, I don’t think I ever told you was that when I first started my company and I hired the web people to host and do my marketing and build my site.
One company were crooks, so I had to leave them.
Another group said they could do all these different things for me, but then they , oh no, we don’t do ‘meta tags’, so I had to get rid of them, because they lied to what they could do, and of course, I’m new to all this, I didn’t know anything about it.
Hired another company and the president skipped town, because he was accused of 11 counts of child molestation, he became a fugitive and skipped the country, so his site went down.
I think I spent in about two years time frame, about $200,000, because each time I lost a site, I couldn’t get that code to be moved over and had to rebuild it, and rebuild the shopping cart.”
Christina: “Oh my God, so Dovell, you’re saying you spent over $200,000 on webmaster?”
Dovell: “Yeah”
Christina: “And then you took my class…”
Dovell: “And then I took your class and what now, it’s [my site costs me] $50 or something like that. Not your class, but what I have to pay now to host everything!”
Christina: That’s an amazing story…

What an amazing story! 200K! There have been Webmasters on every street corner for years now but very few of these know anything about Marketing.Pretty pictures and geek speak in abundance but little understanding of what is required to move a business forward.
It’s a real shame that so many business owners who want to take advantage of what the Web offers get ripped off and while this is happening nothing of any real value is built within their sites.
Hello,
I work for Carmichael Lynch who works on Subaru of America advertising. I am doing on online research project on car consumers and Subaru consumers. I came across this this tweet –
“christinahills Wondering if I should buy a new Mazda or Subaru? I had a great Subaru that lasted me 20+ years. The practical car for the practical gal 06:34 PM September 24, 2008 ″
I was wondering if you would like to participate in the research. We are recruiting people into a private Ning to answer some questions and help with a few other projects. We are giving a $100 dollar incentive for you time.

Full disclosure – I work for Carmichael Lynch who works on the Subaru of America business. I am in the research department. This is to help the agency better understand Subaru/car consumers. This is not a viral campaign.
Thank you for your time,

Hi Christina,
what an amazing story. I have an IT background, but four years ago when I started my own business I thought I don’t want to get into too many details in regards to websites. But tuition or know-how is essential in building a website because otherwise you just expierince what Dovell did. Great to see him happy again.

One of my copywriting clients hired one of those scammy companies where they charge you $40 a month for hosting and give you a “free’ web design. Of course, once she paid, they were late with everything and she couldn’t get her site up (with the great copy I had written for her).
I told her to write them a strong letter with copies to the state’s Attorney General, the Visa fraud unit, and any other agency she could think of. Within 24 hours, the company president was on the phone and she got everything she wanted. She wss willing to give them another try but she could have gotten a refund.
I urge anyone who’s been ripped off by ANYone to write their state’s attorney general. When I had a house in Florida, an alarm company tried to charge me a $300 disconnect fee. The AG told them their contracts violated the state consumer laws and they had to write all of them over again and notify their customers. I bet they wish they’d let me get away with that $300 (which I didn’t have to pay anyway).
