Business Owners Think Backwards

Business owners think backwards!  Why ? Because they need to!

What I’m talking about here is that when you set up your website for email marketing, you need to create things in the reverse order of how your prospects opt in.

Here is how your visitor opts in to your Autresponder Series
(single opt in process):

1) Visitor comes to website and sees opt in box, enters their name and email, and clicks the submit button

2) Visitor lands on a ‘thank you’ page

3) Visitor checks their email, and sees an autoresponder message from you, and now they are in your autoresponder series.

BUT, for you to create that process, you need to work backwards!

Here’s how you, the business owner, sets up the Opt in Box:

1) Create your autoresponder series of messages

2) Create you ‘thank you’ page (or you can use the sytem defaut one that your shopping cart system gives you.  Both 1ShoppingCart/MarketersChoice and Aweber give you a system default ‘thank you ‘ page)

3) Create you opt in box on your website

So when building your website and online store, remember that you need to always think backwards!

  1. Love it Christina! So many of us biz owners are big thinkers. “Thinking backwards” helps us shift our thinking a bit so we don’t miss the details in our marketing efforts. Sometimes we miss the trees for the forest! 🙂

  2. Christina,

You are exactly right! And this is true in so much of business.

When you plan a marketing process, your plan must start with the goal, the place you want your customer to be when they’ve worked through the process.

When we designed Killer Sales Letter, we implemented a system based on the fact that merchants (online and offline) think first of their product, then about who uses them and why. But the sales letter has to begin with customer benefits… almost the reverse order of how a merchant thinks.

As we gain the ability to think forward AND backward, we are able to fully grasp the scope and direction of our business.
