Everyone has heard the saying "Would you like fries with that?"
When you hear that, you immediately know what that is: an upsell (or actually a cross sell) at the point of purchase.
But I want to tell you about an upsell I got offered recently that I thought was brilliant.
Last week at the mall we were getting lunch at Hot Dog On A Stick. There I heard one of the best upsells I had heard in a long time.
I was buying a lemonade for my daughter and the clerk asked me this as I ordered:
"Would you like a large instead?
It’s 50 cents more and twice the size!"
Wow, I thought, that’s a good upsell!
So I asked her ‘How many people go for this?’
She told me 75% of people take that upsell and get the large size when they added that question at the point of ordering. She went on to say that they raised the price of the small, just so they could say that phrase to the customer. The regular used to be $1.75 compared to the large which was $3.00.
Would you like to do something like that?
Would you like to add an upsell to your buying process?
